Growing Health Update Spring 2016

February has been a busy month for the Growing Health Allotment Project in preparation for the project launch next month!! The local community have been extremely busy preparing the sites by clearing, rotavating, plot marking, building sheds and putting together raised beds. Very well done to those who have got involved, the hard work is beginning to pay off!

Throughout February participants have attended allotment mentoring sessions to help guide them through the growing process! They have all been provided with starter kits of seeds and pots to give them a head start.  These sessions have been essential for our inexperienced growers, as well as for those who have a little more knowledge! The sessions are a great way for participants to share their ideas, experiences and encourage groups to work together as a community. A big thank you to Derek Hill for delivering these great sessions for us!!

We would also like to say a big thank you to community members and business’ who have volunteered time or made donations to help support the project!!!  Thank you to Tesco at Meir Park, Jewson at Baswich and Morrisons at Stone.

Putting Hidden Sugars in the Spotlight

The ‘Feel Good Food’ project is now up and running with 6 week nutrition courses at venues throughout Stafford. The final week of the course looks at sugar, and this is something that we all need to think about when buying our weekly food shop, eating out and even in the drinks we consume.

The main sources of sugar that people consume come mainly from sugars added to everyday foods during processing such as jar sauces, condiments and drinks.   Remember the best way to know what is in your food is to not reach for convenience items but prepare from scratch so you know exactly what is in it.  As part of the nutrition course the sugar display shows just how much sugar is in some regularly consumed drinks. Families attending the course have been shocked at the sugar content of some of their favourite drinks and have aimed to either cut down or eliminate such drinks from their diet.

There is currently a course running at Rowley Park Academy, Highfield Grove, Stafford ST17 9RF at 9am on a Monday and one beginning on Tuesday 8th March at 10am at the Signpost Centre, Auden Way, Stafford ST17 9TX.

To book a place – Contact Kate Chester on 0800 111 4554 or email:  cp@sarh.co.uk

So what?
The course empowers the people of Stafford and also Stafford and Rural Homes customers to make small changes to their diet to lose weight and feel better. Any changes made by families will also influence children and the food choices that they make.

More for your money:
How people feel about themselves has a direct impact upon lifestyle choices made by individuals and families. In helping people to lose weight and take more exercise this helps people to feel better and lead to improved confidence and self-esteem.
Confidence and self-esteem issues come in when seeking and gaining employment.
