Throughout August Stafford and Rural Homes (SARH) have held a series of Fun Friday road shows ensuring that communities are ‘Fit for the Future’. The road shows were held at Prospect Road, Merrey Road, Priory Road and Perrin Close.

With over 800 people attending the events, both adults and children enjoyed fun filled afternoons of activities including balloon modelling, face painting, hook a duck, tin can alley, bouncy castle, football skills and inflatable gladiator pit.

During the road shows SARH and partners were able to advise the community on a variety of subjects including; welfare reform, money advice, health and well being and digital inclusion. SARH received excellent community insight from local residents on what matters to them in their community. The Neighbourhood Services Team aim to tackle key issues raised to help develop communities into cleaner, safer more pleasant environments to live.

So What?
By holding events such as the 4 Free Fun Fridays SARH has a great opportunity to engage with local residents in a fun and friendly environment. As well as advising customers on the day, all feedback collected by SARH staff is extremely valuable and helps shape and develop our communities.

More for your Money:
These events have offered SARH an opportunity to consult across 4 communities at low cost.

Jewellery making out of Recycled Items

On Wednesday 30 July we held a Jewellery making course at the Thirlmere Way Day Centre as part of our Community Learning Programme.

7 customers attended the course. Throughout the morning we made earrings, bracelets, necklaces and brooches. Customers were given the chance to be creative and make items with all sorts of different materials including beads, buttons, cotton, lace, wire, feathers and felt. Some customers brought their own items along to add their own personal touch to the items they made.

A big thank you to Helen Wilson and Mark Uttley from Independent Community Arts Project (ICAP) for running the course and making it fun for everyone to join in. We hope to work together again in the future!

So What?
Courses like these allow customers time out of the house to develop skills and knowledge in a fun and relaxing way and meet other members of their own community– for free!

 More for your Money:
By running courses like these we are enabling our customers to save money as they can create and make their own jewellery rather than buying it from shops.
SARH is able to deliver courses such as these at very low cost due to partners agreeing to offer community venues to us free of charge or at a significantly reduced cost as they see events and activities such as these are a community benefit.

Multi-Sports Activity Day with Stoke City Community Trust

On Tuesday 12 August we held a Multi-Sports course ran by Stoke City Community Trust at The Grove Primary School, Highfields.

7 children attended the course and were given the opportunity to take part in a range of sporting activities including football, penalty shoot outs, hurdles, bat and ball competitions, cricket and rounders. All of the children were well behaved and really enjoyed the day.

Thank you to Mark and Matthew from Stoke City Community Trust for running another fantastic course for us.

So What?
By running courses like these during Summer Holiday time we are allowing children to get out the house and enjoy some physical exercise. Children can burn some energy whilst having fun and meeting new friends.

More for your Money:
As this sporting event is a benefit to the community The Grove Primary School offered us the venue free of charge! Thank you to them for their generosity.

Allotment Summer Open Day 2014

On Saturday 2 August Meadow Road Community Allotments held their Summer Open Day which was attended by the Mayor, Ray Sutherland.  After days of rain the sun shone and lots of fun was had by all.  The plot holders and local community enjoyed taking part in a range of games, crafts and competitions such as guess the veg, face painting and raffle to win a delicious cake baked by Maria Campbell (allotment plot holder).  We were also joined by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and B&Q.  Thank you to Kerry from the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust for advising people about the different activities that happen around the borough and sitting with the children colouring and learning about the different types of animals they would see in the wildlife. And also a big thanks to Chris and Rob from B&Q who spent the afternoon building over 20 bug boxes with the kids!

Due to the success of the Meadow Road Project, Stafford and Rural Homes are currently working with Stafford Borough Council to develop similar projects across the Borough.

So What?
The Meadow Road Community Allotment has given local residents the opportunity to spend time outside, increase levels of physical activity and develop new skills. The site has provided great opportunities for people of all ages and increased community cohesion. Allotment sites such as the Meadow Road provide local communities with a cheap source of fruit and vegetables, therefore leading to healthier diets and improved quality of life.

More for your Money:
The Meadow Road Community Allotment Project has enabled a piece of fly tipped and unsightly land to be turned over to community use. This has reduced site management costs for SARH significantly.

Community Learning Programme 2015 – Have Your Say!!

It’s that time of year again when Stafford and Rural Homes (SARH) start thinking about producing the Community Learning Programme (CLP) for the following year.  The CLP aims to provide a wide range of free courses, giving our customers the opportunity to develop, gain new skills and meet new people.  The courses and workshops currently cover 6 keys topics including hobbies and interests, my future, accredited, health and well being, getting money smart and I’m online.  We have asked staff, customers and partners for their thoughts and are currently in the process of collating feedback on what courses / workshops could benefit our customers in 2015.

If you would like to help shape our 2015 CLP, please click here to complete our short questionnaire.

So What?
The SARH CLP gives our customers the opportunity to learn at local venues within their neighbourhoods.  The programme provides a range of courses to suit all ages and helps individuals develop a variety of skills and gain qualifications.

More for your Money:
The long studying nature of the CLP (in existence since 2008) enables SARH to negotiate reduced training costs and low cost venues. Customers and SARH staff deliver a percentage of the courses annually meaning further cost savings.

Laura and Christy are responsible for ensuring all of our Community Learning Programme courses are organised and run smoothly. Contacting customers, tutors, venues and ensuring all paperwork is produced are just a few of the tasks involved. Please take a look at the course list below of what courses are coming up in September.
